The South Dakota Historical Society Press is thrilled to announce its new Emerging Scholars Research Grant. Recipients will receive funds to access the extensive museum and archival collections of the South Dakota State Historical Society and a chance to publish their work.
The society will distribute $3,000 among one to three individuals. Funds may be used for travel, lodging, and research-related fees. This fellowship will allow the press to highlight exciting new perspectives on the history of South Dakota and the Northern Great Plains. We also hope this fellowship will help break down barriers to research for early career scholars and graduate students. Research fellowships are extremely competitive and tend to favor already established scholars. We aim to increase the ability of graduate students and researchers associated with less well-known institutions to conduct research and enable them to share new interpretations of South Dakota’s history.
We particularly encourage submissions from scholars interested in understudied aspects of the region’s history, including but not limited to twentieth century Indigenous history and post-World War II social and cultural history. The collections at the South Dakota State Historical Society are rich and constantly growing. Much of the state’s history remains to be written, and the Press is excited to help up-and-coming researchers craft those stories.
Applications are due to mary.andino@state.sd.us by 15 January 2022. Please see the flyer below for more information. Visit the State Archives website (https://history.sd.gov/archives/) to find out more about their collections.
