Connie Goddard, Ph.D., is an independent scholar and widely published journalist based in New Jersey. Her grandmother attended schools in Spink County, South Dakota, from 1895 to 1905, as did her mother during the 1920s. She has long been interested in how the early schools in the Dakotas were able to provide a remarkably sturdy education for their students.
