Join the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum for a free lecture and book signing by author Sean J. Flynn.
Flynn’s recent book, Without Reservation: Benjamin Reifel and American Indian Acculturation, will be available for sale. His presentation details Reifel's life with an emphasis on his time at Fort Berthold, North Dakota. Author Sean J. Flynn, Ph.D, is a professor of history at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota.
Benjamin Reifel was the first Lakota Sioux and the only South Dakotan of American Indian descent to serve in the U.S. Congress (1961–1971). Before his political career, Reifel had a remarkable, though controversial, career with the Bureau of Indian Affairs including two assignments as BIA superintendent of the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation. In this capacity, he served from 1946–1949 and from 1952–1954, which includes the time the Three Affiliated Tribes were confronting the effects of the construction of the Garrison Dam and Reservoir.
Sensational Sundays are free programs that include a variety of lectures, concerts, movies, and tours that provide engaging, educational, historic, and cultural information.
